Why do girls play the part of angels in nativity plays?

Perhaps due to the weird Victorian confusion between Angels and Fairies? They ended up portraying both as pale winged women in white gowns, which isn't an accurate depiction of either creature (as far as the original sources go).

well, actualy, in my friend's church's nativity play, boys DID play the part of angels.
probably because of 'their' hair, their voice. People probably found it uh, enchanting or something. but boys should play as angels because that's what it says in the bible......
Because all the boys stand there playing with themselves! Who wants to see an angel playing with their tackle?!
not always my school had boys and girls as angels,, but in away you can say why do boys always paly shepards?
actually, my little girl demanded to be a donkey. but i guess its cos most little girls like to wear pretty sparkly dresses and wings. after all, there's only space for one mary!
Well if you look at the numbers in a school class its most likely to be 50/50 boys/girls. So apart from mary there arent really any gender specified parts. Even if a few of the girls are animals theres going to be some girls left with no part. I think its just easier to put the girls as angels, then theyre all the same as thier friends, apart from mary (who i was v jeleous of in school - haha) And all the boys are either animals/ wise men.
Some girls are stereotyped, and liked to be seen as angels within themselves and in the eyes of the others, and guys would like to be seen as the leaders, but in reality it is an image that is not fully truth, as both sexes have what it takes to build the real genuine picture.

Angels are neither male nor female, so can be played by either gender. But several of the roles in the nativity are written for men (Joseph, wise men.)

Sexism probably is a factor, too. Boys play Shepherds (because they are working in the fields) and girls play angels.

Well, if not the angels, then what do the girls get to play? There is only one Mary, and besides the animals, there aren't any other female characters. I would think this, in addition to all the new perceptions of feminine angels, would be the reason.
Because usually the boys don't want to participate and the girls are all too eager to have a role. We've even had wise men played by girls. So what! It's a small church reenactment, not the second coming! Relax.
When I was in primary school (way back in the early 70's), I always wanted to play the angel in the school nativity play. Unfortunately (as there were songs to sing) the angels were always boy sopranos and because I had such a low voice, I always was a shepherd! It rankles still today as my brother got to be an angel and me (the only girl in the family) always had to walk around with a towel on my head!

and as to ur Q i have no idea..... perhaps boys dont like playing tht part and the girls do?
because most little lads don't like to wear a dress infront of other little lads. sexual stereotypes are strong and simplistic for infants
