Do you think that racism plays an important role in modern politics? If so, why?

I believe that racism, sexism and overall hate play a large role in modern politics, moreso than before, that is. No matter what party you hail from, you are bound to be associated with racism and prejudice. However, unlike the early 20th century, we don't outright SAY that it is racist, it just is. Please discuss, in detail, why or why not you believe that racism has an overwhelming effect on political power and legislative laws.

I think accusations of racism play a more important role in politics than racism itself. Any time a candidate (especially one on the right) says something which can be considered, in any way, a racial remark, it will be all over the news, and that person will be forever branded "racist" no matter how many times they apologize. I am not someone on the left or right, so don't take this as being in any way a matter of party loyalty: it's just that the left tends to play the "racist" card a lot more than the right, even though there are many on the left who, in one way or another, are racist themselves.

The accusation of racism, and the term racist, have become political weapons, so loaded that no intelligent discussion of race and society can take place in the public sphere.
