What is Emo music and who plays it?

I'm from Mexico and am not familiar with the term, from what I've read it seems to be depressing but can you explain more and tell me of bands who play it?

Emo bands are bands that express emotions or feelings through their music, they are not people who sit around crying and slitting wrists like a lot of narrow minded people think. Emo music is often mistaken for pop-rock bands.

its roots are punk music.

ian mckaye from minor threat started some early emo bands...

but the sound now is pretty different.

the sound varies.

people get a little carried away with the term.

bands cant write a song with emotion and not get called emo at some point.

but there are generally two sounds that are associated with the term "emo".

there is the acoustic guitar and lyrics of love, dying, longing for the love of someone %26amp; etc. and band that has this sound is the spill canvas... maybe straylight run or early november.

there is another sound that is considered emo which is a little more "violent" sounding. Usually speaking of lost love, self-inflicting wounds, death, alcoholism and many random dark metaphors[or are they just dark scenarios with no metaphoric meaning intended? hmm.]. Bands with this sound are aiden, hawthorne heights, %26amp; old my chemical romance %26amp; old senses fail.

My Chemical Romance=not Emo.

So there are basically three waves of Emo. It derived from Punk. It doesn't stand for Emotional, but rather "Emotive Hardcore".

An example of an Emo band would be Rites of Spring. Lately "Emo" has somehow changed its meaning. I just told you what it originally meant until a bunch of boys wearing their sisters' tight pants stepped into the picture.

they are emotional. They have very high pitch voice when they scream(screamo). They sing about misery.
Buy the book "Everybody Hurts". It fully describes the term emo in great detail. It also listens emo bands, books, stores, movies, etc. You WONT be disappointed.

Emo is a mixture of hardcore punk and alternative rock.

Bands like Death Cab For Cutie, Hawthorne Heights, The Used, My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday and Senses Fail are usually referred to as emo..
